Nice review of 2007 and perspectives for the next year in business:

Originally we planned to pick the most promising Web company for 2008. But in the end the ReadWriteWeb team decided to follow the example set by Time magazine last year, when it named “You” as its ‘Person of the Year’.

Likewise we think there is no single Web company that is more promising than… the open source movement, a loose-knit group that aims to make a huge impact by tying all Web companies together.

Users Are Seriously Addicted to The Internet

Cell phones and the internet are becoming more and more an essential part of our daily lives. So essential, in fact, that the majority of 1,011 people when asked how long they would feel OK without online access, 15% of respondents said just a day or less. 21% said a couple of days and another 19% said a few days. Only a fifth more said they could go for a week. Men were more likely to say they could not go without the internet with 59% choosing one of the three options above; vs. 50% of women. Response did not vary significantly among age groups. Similarly 48% of respondents agreed that, “If I cannot access the Internet when I want to, I feel like something important is missing.”

Trends of the use of conversational marketing and social networking data:

Spending on social media and conversational marketing will outpace that of traditional marketing by 2012. Marketers must do to become a part of the dialogue and how to leverage conversations in ways that benefit businesses, brands and lives, according to a study by TWI Surveys. Nearly 57% of respondents report that in 5 years time, what they spend on conversational marketing will be greater than that of traditional marketing, while another 24% believed it would be the same as traditional marketing. Significantly, 81% of marketers believe that in 5 years they’ll be spending as much or more on conversational marketing vs. traditional marketing. The findings indicate that while social media adoption is still very much in its infancy, communications professionals foresee significant growth in adoption and spending over the next five years.
